Join us at 1:30 pm on February 21, Family Day, at the launch party for the Snug Cove Gateway Mural! A community art project brought to life by three local artists Di, Paula Love and Sarah Haxby. The mural painted on sixteen wood panels is to be installed on the lock block wall at the gateway to Snug Cove as a welcoming and inviting entrance to Bowen Island that shares and celebrates our environment, local heritage, culture and community spirit.

Brought to you by the Public Art Advisory Committee, with funding from Sangre de Fruta Botanical and the Province of BC.

This event kicks off 2022 BC Heritage Week. The theme this year is "Altogether Inclusive"

Here are some behind-the-scenes moments that have gone into painting the Snug Cove Gateway Mural by artists Di, Paula Love and Sarah Haxby.

1. First, the artists brainstormed how to intertwine various stories and ideas to ultimately create a mural that reflects Bowen Island's favourite animals, plants and places.

2. Once there was a solid idea and outline to reference, the artists used a projector to trance the main elements on to the panels.

3. Then the artists painted the panels according to the outlines provided by the projector and invited various members of the community to participate in the painting process and add their own unique touch.

The Public Art Advisory Committee doesn't only advise, they are quite hands-on! This "boots on the ground" group was spotted at the lock block wall, measuring panel placement for the Snug Cove Gateway Mural project.

We're so lucky to have Artists Di, Paula Love and Sarah Haxby bringing together artists of all different ages and styles on Bowen to contribute to the creation of the Snug Cove Gateway mural, making sure it reflects the work of our artistic community. Pictured here are Frankie's fish and Janet's meadow.

Spot the Muni staff! Earlier this week, Donnie was working on giving the lock block wall a fresh coat of paint. Getting it ready for the gateway mural!

The gateway mural project is coming along nicely!

Were you one of the 150 respondents to the Gateway mural survey on Bowen flora and fauna? The artists have been crafting together a mural that encompasses and reflects the wishes of our community.

We would like to give a big thanks to Sangre de Fruta for their generous donation towards this project, and for lending a hand in painting in details!

Be part of the project: share your ideas and stories about what animals, plants and places celebrate and represent Bowen Island, and what they mean to you. The trio of artists (Paula Love, Di and Sarah Haxby) working on the new Bowen Island Gateway mural (on the lock block wall) want to include your ideas in the design of the new mural.

To share your ideas about what you would like to see included in the mural, please fill out the Bowen Island Gateway Mural community engagement survey

Got a story that goes with your ideas? For instance: how you accidentally bare-foot slug-surfed down a grassy hill on a rainy day as a child and then forever felt connected to slugs?  Please share your stories and ideas and tell us why you feel connected to your favourite Bowen Island animals, plants and places!
